Exploring Dandelions in Nature

As the warm weather brought flowers into bloom, we jumped into our flower unit from Idlewild & Co and spent time outdoors exploring the plants in our own backyard.

Our curiosity led us to create this Mini Dandelion Unit Study, turning a simple afternoon outside into an engaging, hands-on learning experience!

Dandelion Unit Study Activities

Read Aloud: The Dandelion Seed

We started by reading The Dandelion Seed by Joseph Anthony. This beautifully illustrated book explains the life cycle of a dandelion in a simple way for kids to understand.

Hands-on Nature Study

After reading, we went on a dandelion hunt! We collected dandelions in every stage of growth—buds, full blooms, and seed heads—and placed them in our harvest basket.

To dive deeper, we also pulled up a whole dandelion plant to examine its root system and discuss how it helps the plant grow.

Life Cycle Sorting Activity

Once we brought our dandelion collection inside, we sorted them by growth stage—buds, flowers, and seed heads—while reviewing what we had learned from the book. This simple activity helped reinforce the dandelion life cycle in a hands-on way.

Fun & Engaging Dandelion Activities

Letterwork: “D” for Dandelion

To incorporate letter recognition, I wrote a big letter “D” on the pavement with chalk, and my little one used dandelion flowers to trace the shape.

It was a fun way to work on letter formation—plus, “D” is the first letter of his name, so it made it extra special!

Dandelion Sensory Play

We set up a simple dandelion sensory bin using:

  • Dandelion flowers & leaves
  •  A little water
  • A wooden spoon for scooping & mixing

My youngest loved splashing and stirring, making this a great sensory activity for little hands!

DIY Dandelion Playdough

After collecting so many dandelions, we put them to good use by making homemade dandelion playdough! It was such a hit, and the kids played with it for hours.

Dandelion Art

For art time, the kids painted wishing dandelions using Q-tips and white & green paint.

The Q-tips made perfect little fuzzy seed heads, but fingerprints would work too for an extra personal touch!
