The beautiful spring weather was bringing the flowers to bloom, and it was the perfect time to dive into our flower unit from our Idlewild & Co curriculum.
We got outside to explore the flowers we had growing in our own backyard which led to this Mini Dandelion Unit.

Mini Dandelion Unit Study
Outside we all gathered together to start our lesson by reading The Dandelion Seed By Joseph Anthony.
It was a really cute story with beautiful illustrations that explains the life cycle of a dandelion in an easy way for kids to understand.
After our reading we walked around the yard and picked dandelions in all of it’s different flowering stages and put them in our harvest basket.
We also pulled up a whole dandelion plant to look at and discuss it’s root system.
Check out these roots!
The Life Cycle
We emptied our harvest basket and sorted through different flowering stages that we collected. Going over the life cycle of a dandelion once again while referencing back to the book we had just read.
Letterwork
D did his letter work by using the flower tops to trace the letter “D” I wrote on the cement with chalk.
Sensory Play
E took some of the flowers and leaves to make a sensory bin.
Add in a little bit of water along with a wooden spoon from the kitchen and she had so much fun splashing, mixing, and scooping the dandelion pieces.
Later we used the picked flowers to make some homemade dandelion playdough. The kids had so much fun playing with it. You can get the easy recipe to make your own here.
Arts & Crafts
Of course we had to make time for arts & crafts where the kids painted using Q-Tips with white and green paint to make, as the kids like to call them, the wishing dandelions.
The Q-Tips worked really well to make the white fuzziess, but little fingerprints would have been really cute!
