Every spring we start our garden and so every spring we learn about seeds.
The kids love to help out and watch all of the tiny seeds grow into “giant” plants. (Size is all in perspective here.)
Their eyes light up with every new sprout, new leaf, and new flower.
If you know me, you know my passion is gardening, and it fills my heart with great joy to see my children enjoying it as much as I do.
Along with hands on learning, we love to add in some good books too, of course.
These 9 books are a wonderful way for children to learn about the different kinds of seeds and how they grow.
9 Picture Books About Seeds
Seeds Move! by Robin Page
“Every seed, big or small, needs sunlight, water, and an uncrowded place to put down roots. But how do seeds get to the perfect place to grow? This exploration of seed dispersal covers a wide range of seeds and the creatures that help them move, from a coconut seed floating on waves to an African grass seed rolled by a dung beetle, to a milkweed seed floating on the wind.”
A Seed is Sleepy by Dianna Hutts Aston
“Part of the incredible six-book Nature Books series from artist Sylvia Long and author Dianna Hutts Aston, A Seed is Sleepy introduces children to a fascinating array of seed and plant facts.
Turn each page to explore the amazing world of these garden wonders through watercolor illustrations that bring to life nature landscapes filled with seeds, flowers, plants, leaves, and trees.”
Miss Maple’s Seeds by Eliza Wheeler
“What happens to seeds that don’t sprout? Fortunately, they have Miss Maple to look after them. Every year, she rescues orphan seeds, taking them to her cozy maple tree house. All winter long, she nurtures them and teaches them the ways of seeds and the paths by which they might find their new homes. And come spring, she sends them off to take root out in the wide world and to sprout into the wonderful plants she knows they’ll become. Celebrate every season with Miss Maple, from Earth Day to graduations to harvest festivals.”
Berries, Nuts, and Seeds by Diane L. Burns
“Describes a variety of berries, nuts, and seeds that might be found on a nature walk and includes identification information. Invites young naturalists to spot wildlife. Safety tips are provided, and interesting activities are suggested.”
A Packet of Seeds by Deborah Hopkinson
“Having moved to the frontier, Anna is aware of her mother’s homesickness for her family, friends, and garden back east and so decides to give her a gift she will truly appreciate using a special pack of seeds she packed before they moved out west.”
