Gardening during the fall is a lot more relaxing than gardening in the summer.

But that’s just my personal opinion.

There’s less bugs, less heat, and the weed growth definitely slows down a bit. My kind of gardening conditions.

Plants that are the perfect match for your fall garden

Some crops love the hot summer months, while others thrive in the cool fall weather.

1. Kale

Kale will always be on my list of must grow veggies. I have a lot of luck with kale and have found it to be very hardy and fairly easy to grow. I love adding it to soups, salads, even pasta dishes. Or make it into some kale chips for a quick, healthy snack.

Try this variety: Red Russian Kale

2. Spinach

Another cool weather loving green that is so versatile. Spinach is so nutritious and can be added to numerous meals. You can use this interchangeably with kale in recipes. My favorite way to enjoy spinach is cooked into some scrambled eggs with feta.

Try this variety: Giant Noble

3. Lettuce

I just learned this year (after two failed attempts at trying to grow lettuce during the summer) that lettuce is actually a cool weather crop. If you’ve had trouble growing lettuce in the past try it again this fall to see how it goes.

Try this variety: Black Seeded Simpson

4. Celery

Celery is a great addition to soups or stock recipes. The kids love snacking on them dipped in ranch dressing or peanut butter.

Try this variety: Tall Utah

5. Carrots

I had never tasted a carrot so delicious or sweet until I grew my own. If you haven’t grown your own carrots before, you need to try this year. You don’t know what you’re missing!

Try: Scarlet Nantes

6. Radishes

I love how quickly radishes go from seed to harvest. Some varieties are ready in under 30 days giving you multiple harvests over the season.

Try this variety: Cherry Belle they’re ready to harvest in just 25 days!

7. Beets

Beets are new for me this year. To be honest, I actually never tried them before. But, since we’re learning to be self sufficient and trying to supply our family with homegrown food throughout the seasons, I’m willing to give them a try.

If you have a good beet recipe, please let me know in the comments!

8. Peas

Aside from green beans, fresh peas are another one of my favorite veggies. Who doesn’t love fresh pea pods off the vine? I also love adding them into a stir fry.

9. Broccoli

Oh how I love broccoli – alright. I guess I have a lot of favorite vegetables. But come on, who doesn’t love broccoli?

10. Cauliflower

Forget just growing plain, white cauliflower- Have you seen the colorful varieties that are available? I’m trying a purple variety this year.

Try this variety: Purple of Sicily

Have you grown any of these crops before? What are your fall garden must haves?
