When to harvest calendula

The best time to harvest calendula flowers is in the morning when they are almost opened or fully opened, once the dew has dried.

Depending on how you want to dry the plant (see the next section below) you have two options for harvesting.

  1. Snip the blooms right at the base of the flower head where it connects to the stem for air drying or drying in a dehydrator.
  2. Cut at the base of the entire plant for hang drying.

How to dry calendula flowers

Dried calendula can be used to make teas, herbal oils, or even added to food.

There are a few ways you can dry calendula flowers.

Hang drying

This drying method requires the entire stem of the calendula plant.

  • Gather calendula flowers by the stems and tie them together with twine or a rubber band.
  • Hang upside down on a line or hook out of direct sunlight.
  • Flowers will be dry in about 2-3 weeks. The petals will be crispy to the touch when they are ready.

Air drying

This drying method is also best used for just the flowers.

  • Brush off any insects that may be hanging out on your flowers.
  • Place flowers upside down on a drying rack.
  • Allow the flowers to dry for 2-3 weeks.

Food dehydrator

This drying method is best used for just the flowers.

  • Brush off any insects that may be hanging out on your flowers.
  • Place flowers upside down on a drying rack.
  • Dry at 90-95 degrees Fahrenheit for about 24 hours.

No matter which drying method you decide to use, make sure the flowers are completely dry before storing to avoid mold and spoilage.

Storing dried calendula flowers

Store dried calendula flowers in an airtight container, like this one. To ensure a longer shelf-life, keep them in a cool dark location that is out of direct sunlight.

Dried calendula flowers will keep for about one year if stored properly.
