Every year, it’s a cherished tradition in our home to make handmade ornaments.
I look forward to unpacking each one every November (it’s also a tradition to decorate for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving), reliving the memories, and seeing how much the kids have grown over the years.
A couple years ago we made these personalized baking soda clay Christmas ornaments, and I absolutely adored how they turned out.
If you’re looking to create your own meaningful ornaments this holiday season, this simple and fun baking soda clay recipe is the perfect start.
You can also use this clay to make keepsake baby handprints!

How to Make Baking Soda Clay Christmas Ornaments
Here’s what you need:
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1 1/4 cups water
- straw (something to make a small hole through the ornament)
- cookie cutters (I used these)
- string/twine
- letter stamps
Here’s what you do:
- Put all the ingredients into a medium saucepan.
- Stir constantly over medium heat until it thickens. (It should be the consistency of mashed potatoes.)
- Let the mixture cool.
- Once cooled, kneed until it is no longer sticky.
- Roll out the clay to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Use cookie cutters to make shapes out of the dough. Tip: Use a mason jar lid ring to make the perfect circle.
- Use a straw to poke a hole through the top of the ornament about 1/2 inch from the edge.
- Gently press stamps into the clay to personalize your ornaments.
- Lay them out on parchment paper to dry. It will take 24-48 hours for the clay to fully harden.
- Once hardened, tie a string through the ornament, and hang it up for all to see.

I hope these baking soda clay ornaments help inspire you to start your own holiday crafting tradition!

Until next time –

Hello! Would you be able to apply a vinyl to these or would I be able to put an apoxy or something like that over it before applying the vinyl? Didn’t know if the coating over it would mess with the Ornament over time.
Hi Michelle!
The texture of the finished product is a little rough making it difficult for vinyl to adhere to. Adding epoxy is a great idea to create a smoother surface for the vinyl. I don’t imagine it would affect the ornament negatively. Let me know how it comes out if you decide to try it!
How many ornaments would this make? Enough for a classroom of 12 kids?
hi! how many ornaments does one batch of ingredients make?
Hello – one batch will make enough for about one dozen small ornaments.
